  • Title: Visible Light Communication: the Journey from OpenVLC to Battery-free Applications

  • Visible Light Communication (VLC) has emerged in the last few years as a promising technology not only for high-speed communication but also for serving a new generation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices that may leverage the pervasive lighting infrastructures. Integrating VLC in lighting environments for IoT requires the design of both networked and intelligent luminaries as well as new IoT devices. A common experimental platform is necessary to lower the entrance barriers of VLC and speed up the research development. In order to close this gap, we have introduced the OpenVLC initiative almost 10 years ago, which has now become a reference platform for VLC-based IoT research. In this talk, we will first review our journey on how we keep improving the platform for the community, while providing exemplary case studies on how we have applied it to our research. We will then look at designs of IoT systems that leverage the low baseline energy consumption of LEDs to jointly deliver lighting and networked communication to battery-free IoT devices, and how we are using it in the context of greenhouse applications.
